2020-10-17: Fiction and Buttons

PROJECT FOCUS: Whystic Lodge in Altspace

Yesterday I experimented with the new button in Altspace. This is a clickable item that brings up a dialogue box (text) into the users view. Through testing, I noticed you can put in a maximum of 500 characters before it becomes unusable for various reasons, which is about 100 words. I found out there is a literary form called the 100 word story, and I was excited about the possibility of hiding one of these buttons inside of a VR book in Altspace. Then the book would appear clickable and bring up something to read.

A while back, I had initiated a project on my facebook page called "The Magic Forest", which was an attempt to create a shared fictional world through the writing of small snippets of information that would identify people, places or things in this place. The intention was to provide an open source / public domain reference which writers could use to set stories within the Magic Forest. I had such a short story in mind, and had attempted to write it a few times in different ways. So the plot was developed in different ways. When I discovered this 100 story form, I thought I might give it a try for this story. It was not easy. Choosing words carefully, deleting superfluous adjectives, and leaving only the most important concepts and emotions was more difficult that it sounds. But I did it, and I think I learned a lot.

As a result, one of the books on the shelf of Whystic Lodge is clickable, and visitors can have something interesting to do while in world. We'll see where this leads...
