2020-10-18: Of Books, Urns, and Paintings

PROJECT FOCUS: Whystic Lodge in Altspace

Yesterday, I made a texture for the books in the Tales from the Magic Forest series, and also a model that sits on the shelves in the WHystic Lodge.

I did find a nice urn model, which because it was 3d scan of an actual antique urn, was extremely high poly. I think it was something like 25K polys, but I decimated down to 400 polys which worked nicely somehow turning it delightfully toony. It was a large asian style urn, but instead of the typical blue and white, it had nice shades of brown, orange and white. I filtered the texture of it out to a more abstract look, because I don't really like the look of realism in Whystic Lodge. It jars the sense of style in Altspace. Something more graphic or even toony tends to work better due to the avatars. Here is what they look like:

I meant to write both an introduction to the Magic Forest for the first volume, and another short story called "The Apprentice's Question", but I only managed to do the introduction.

Also, I looked around for some images I might want to use as paintings in this room. That was really difficult to find anything congruent with the style and yet didn't look overly modern, since it is a manor house with a very castely style. At any rate, here are some of the references images I found that might work is I filter them a bit.
